Fresno,CA. 25 individuals took the streets in protest of police brutality. Friends of Joseph Ma (a young man slain by the Fresno Police, after jumping out of a car, and running. The police claimed he had a firearm, but have provided no evidence to substantiate that claim) and many more joined on the corner of Blackstone, and Shaw to protest police brutality, and raise awareness about the issue. A local graffiti artist was among the crowd, and brought along an interesting idea to create protest signs with. He used saran wrap, and spray paint to create a protest sign. I had never seen this at an action before, and it impressed me significantly. During the time it took to set up and create the saran wrap mural, the police got interested in our actions, and sent the chopper to keep an eye on us
“Fuck the Police, Hang killer cops” Graffiti piece created with saran wrap, and spray paint.
After an hour of protesting peacefully, the group took to Blackstone ave, and peacefully marched south to the Gettysburg intersection. They blocked traffic, and used the time as an opportunity to raise awareness of the situations across the nation. With chants such as “I can’t breathe!” the 3 last words of Eric Garner that have now become a battle cry of anyone seeking justice for Eric Garner, as well as “Hands up, Don’t shoot” the battle cry of Ferguson, and the Mike Brown protesters and the more common “No Justice, No Peace
At the Gettysburg intersection, a lone motorcycle cop using the sidewalk was able to make it through. He was mainly focused on traffic control, and the safety of the march. We decided to turn around and head back north in order to continue the march. Eventually more police were on the scene, they created a sort of escort for the march. We arrived back at the corner of Blackstone, and Shaw. The police dispersed almost immediately and no arrest were made. The group gathered on the corner for a while longer and dispersed before 11.
